A manager who battered policemen and tore their uniforms as they tried to detain him over loud music was on Thursday sent to prison and fined Dhs2,250.

The British defendant – a sales manager, 41 – assaulted an Omani policeman, 22, and his compatriot colleague, 23, inside a Downtown Dubai tower on June 22, as per records at the Bur Dubai Police Station.

He tore the policeman’s uniform and also ripped off the colleague’s name from his uniform. He was under the influence of alcohol, making a lot of noise and disturbing the tranquillity of the tower, prosecutors said.

He skipped court questioning on Sept.5. The Criminal Court sentenced him to three months plus deportation over assault on on-duty cops. It fined him Dhs250 for damaging uniforms and Dhs2, 000 for alcohol abuse.

On the record, following six months of the unbearable noise disturbance, a woman staying inside a flat under his flat contacted the police. The police operations room dispatched both cops to contain the situation.

The woman explained to them how the defendant would maximise music volume and disturb their peace. They ascended to his flat with a watchman. The music was so loud. They knocked on the door several times.

He came out shirtless. “We told him to fetch his ID, dress up and follow us downstairs. I walked in front of him and my colleague behind him until outside the tower. He was smelling of alcohol,” explained the policeman.

Both cops anticipated harm as he kept acting strangely and looked annoyed. The colleague started telling him how loud music was not good. He poked his neck, scratched it and ripped the name off his uniform.

The policeman tried to intervene. He seized his arm and tore his uniform. During the scuffle, the policeman fell with him to the ground. “I fell on my leg and felt pain. The defendant fell on his face and it reddened.”

They managed to subdue, handcuff him and take him inside the patrol vehicle.
