The final touches have been put on the seventh edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), which is scheduled to be held at various state-of-the-art venues in Sharjah from February 2 to 12, 2024.

Organised by the Sharjah Women’s Sports, the prestigious event will take place under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Sharjah Women’s Sports.

The much-awaited 10-day tournament features 560 sportswomen forming 63 teams hailing from 15 Arab countries who will compete in eight games, including volleyball, table tennis, basketball, shooting, archery, fencing, athletics, and karate.

Speaking to Gulf Today in an exclusive interview, Noura Ali Al Shamsi, Manager of the Arab Women Sports Tournament, highlighted the significance of the Arab Women Sports Tournament and attributed its success to the unwavering support of Sheikha Jawaher.

“The AWST has been led by Sheikha Jawaher since the first edition was conceptualised. So it’s a huge responsibility as Her Highness strives to ensure that every aspect of the event is meticulously planned and executed to achieve the highest standards.

“The tournament emphasises the importance of fostering women’s competitive spirit and excellence, particularly in fields that are traditionally considered non-traditional, with sports being at the forefront,” she added.

Noura, a shining example of female leadership in the emirate who boasts an impressive track record in community development, has been associated with the Arab Women Sports Tournament for a long time.

An MBA graduate from the University of Sharjah, she has tackled numerous leadership roles, each focused on designing and executing impactful programmes that benefit the community.

With a wealth of experience, Noura has previously served as Deputy Director of Sharjah Children at Rubu’ Qarn.

The eight fully integrated sports facilities across Sharjah will host the competitions.

Sharjah Women’s Sports, Sharjah Club in Samnan, and Sharjah Club in Al Bataeh will host basketball training and competitions, while volleyball training and games will take place at Khorfakkan Club.

Karate competitions will take place at the Al Qarayan Children Center, while table tennis competitions will be held at Sharjah Club in Al Hazanah and Sharjah Women’s Sports, which will also host fencing.

Athletics competitions will be held at Al Thiqah Club after training at Sharjah Club in Al Hazanah, which will also accommodate archery training and games. Lastly, shooting training and games are scheduled at Al Dhaid Club.

“This edition of AWST marks an exciting expansion, with sporting events hosted not only in Sharjah but also across the vibrant Middle and Eastern regions of the Emirate. We aim to leverage this wider reach to showcase the beauty and potential of these diverse communities.

“By taking competitions to different regions of Sharjah city, AWST fosters cultural exchange and expands its reach, ultimately contributing to the emirate’s vibrant tourism scene,” added Noura.

Talking about the sort of impact AWST will have on broader social life in the region, the AWST manager said: “Sports have the amazing ability to create a shared experience that transcends language and cultural differences. Whether cheering on their favourite team or playing side-by-side, people can connect through the joy and excitement of competition.

“During the competition, while languages may differ, the language of sportsmanship, teamwork, and shared passion creates a unique sense of unity. It’s a powerful example of how we can celebrate our individualities while coming together to enjoy something special.

“The tournament not only provides a competitive environment for athletes but also serves as a powerful message of empowerment and inclusion.”

The UAE athletes representing different clubs will compete in all eight sport categories of the AWST.

On being asked what sort of expectations she has from teams representing the UAE, Noura said: “This year, the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club teams are gearing up for an incredible showing, determined to deliver an awe-inspiring experience for both athletes and spectators.”

The past edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament, held in 2020, witnessed the participation of 78 clubs from 18 Arab countries, where athletes from across the region displayed their skills and determination in a variety of sporting events.
