Sharjah Women's Sports Club make history, reach Arab Women's Basketball Championship quarter-finals

Achieving a significant feat, the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club (SWSC) basketball team qualified for the quarter-finals of the 23rd Arab Women’s Basketball Championship, which is taking place in Tunisia.

After producing a scintillating performance, the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club reached the last eight of the tournament for the first time.

The 23rd Arab Women’s Basketball Championship, which started on September 20, will conclude on September 28, features the participation of 11 clubs from different Arab countries.

Bouncing back after going down fighting against Smouha Al Masry in the opener, the SWSC team won their next two consecutive matches.

In a thumping win, they defeated Somalia’s Mogadishu City 80-53. The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club next squared off against Algerian club Setif. In a thrilling match, SWSC got the better of Setif 94-91.

Sharjah Women’s Sports Club will meet Jordan’s Al Fuheis and Tunisia’s Al Amal respectively on Saturday to wrap off the preliminary round before the quarter-finals begin on Monday.

“The players produced an amazing performance and showed their character, which resulted in this historic achievement,” said Ahmed Saleh Halfawi, coach of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club basketball team.

“The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club players proved their mettle with strong resolve and dedication. They deserve our admiration for their fantastic performance and historic accomplishment. “

Ahmed Saleh Halfawi also hailed Sharjah Women’s Sports and Sharjah Women’s Sports Club for their efforts to support the club’s players.

Hind pointed out that continuous success and accomplishments witnessed by the women’s sports sector in the Emirate of Sharjah stem from the directives and vision of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS), are in line with the implementation of the club’s objectives that emphasize on the importance of female athletes participating in such championships, and are vital in enhancing their chances of future qualifications in regional and global competitions.
