Though the two worlds of entertainment and politics orbit around
different issues and are inhabited by people who are structured
somewhat differently, they always tend to meet and intermingle one way
or another. Politicians have long been fascinated by leading ladies of
the silver screen that made for some great stories of what happens when
these two worlds collide.

As the Tunisians are celebrating the first anniversary of their revolt
that toppled a 30-year autocratic regime and set off the so-called Arab
Spring, it is a sad state of affairs today in other Arab countries
where people took inspiration from the successful Tunisian revolt.

The English media love him and he thrives on the attention they give
him. Maybe it’s a match made in heaven, but is it the right time for
Jose to ditch his Madrid project and set sail to conquer England once
again? I am not convinced.

Russia showed contempt for the entire Arab world, not only because it
chose willingly to support an Arab regime involved in crimes against
humanity, but also because it literally spat on the Arab League’s
initiative, which — despite its shortcomings — is still an attempt to
ease the pains of the Syrian people. Russia sided with the losers out of
an apparent resentment towards the Arab Spring. Why “losers” and why
“resentment,” would you ask? Let’s begin with the second….

| The Indian government has decided to expand the scope of its ambitious
programme to give each citizen a unique identity number, ignoring

gathered by the authorities. |

What do you miss about home?
|

Published on February 4, 2012 | Potpourri

| Many people leave their home countries to work overseas. They do it to
look after their families back home because home did not offer the
opportunities they could find somewhere else. Sometimes the job is
menial and sometimes it is high paying. The jobs may be different; the
reasons for being in the UAE may be different, the way you spend your
time here may be different but there are two thoughts or feelings that
everyone shares. Firstly, there is no doubt that most people, who came here by choice, love the UAE. |

| With Russia standing firm on its rejection of any effective
international action to end the conflict in Syria, it is difficult to
see an early end to the 10-month-old revolt against the regime of
President Basher Al Assad. Iran and Russia are continuing to provide
arms to the Syrian regime and Moscow is blocking any UN Security
Council decision to even criticise the violent suppression of
pro-democracy protests. |

In the four-trading days of the previous week ending on Friday, indices
surged steadily. The 30-share Sensitive index gained 2.96 per cent at
17,233.98 while Nifty was up 3.09 per cent or 156.10 points at 5,204.70
on Friday. Last week, I had mentioned about a key level of 5,168 for
Nifty to achieve for a sustained rally. There were also two
major events slated on Jan.24th and Jan.25th — the Reserve Bank of
India’s monetary policy review and the F&O expiry respectively.

I bought farmland when I was a resident in India. Now that I
have become an Non-resident India (NRI) and planning to continue to live
in the Gulf for some more years, can I continue to hold such property?
Or is there any permission required from any authorities? Please
advise. Sunil Roy, Sharjah
You can continue to hold the
farmland bought as a resident and there is no need to obtain the
approval from Reserve Bank after becoming NRI.
