Abu Dhabi: Athletes from all over the world have come to compete in the U-18 Al Ain International Jiu Jitsu Championship, which kicks off at the Al Ain Sports and Cultural Club (AASCC) on Friday.

The organising committee has designated Day 1 of the tournament for female competition, with Day 2 designated to male athletes. The championship, which is in its fifth session following considerable expansions to the sport has witnessed a substantial turnout of male and female athletes of various ranks and belts to compete in the various categories.

According to the UAE Jiu Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF), registrations for the U-18 tournament closed early this season due to having reached the maximum capacity of registrants. Athletes will compete in the tournament on a points-based system to earn the highest number in their category by the end of the 2017/18 season.

The Al Ain International Jiu Jitsu Championship U-18 is part of the 2018/19 season and is included in the UAEJJF World-Rankings, an entity that endeavors to strengthen the presence of Jiu-Jitsu in the community.

‘Ideal opportunity’

UAEJJF CEO Fahad Al Shamsi affirmed that local championships are all linked to international events, as they prepare local athletes from various age groups for international championships.

Shamsi said: “Local championships are an ideal opportunity to discover and harness the talents of new athletes, and to help them to reach peak performance. As exemplified in previous tournaments held in Al Ain, Ajman, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi, the competitions have greatly contributed towards qualifying talents and towards providing a wealth of options for coaches of national teams.”

Shamsi added: “The strategies of the UAEJJF to develop this sport seek to organise the world’s best championships, to recruit leading experts and staff members and to provide programs, training camps and other opportunities for athletes to develop their talents and to work with the strongest schools.”

The Al Ain Championship is reflective of the UAE’s commitment towards organising and hosting the best international Jiu Jitsu championships, standing as a testament to how much the sport has advanced in the UAE. With Abu Dhabi as the world’s capital for Jiu Jitsu, Al Ain has attained a significant percentage of skilled athletes and title-holders in various categories and weight classes, making it a main source of skills and talents for national teams.

Chairman of the Al Ain Club for Sports Games Company Al Kaabi added: “The Al Ain Championship is a major fixture on the season’s agenda. Through it, we seek to apply the highest quality of standards in the hosting of the championship in coordination with UAEJJF so that it may live up to its reputation as the leader of UAE’s clubs.”

Given the attention and support given by the Al Ain administration to Jiu Jitsu during recent years, Al Kaabi voiced his confidence in the ability of Al Ain’s athletes to achieve the best results and to win medals at the championships.
