Khorfakkan

Thanks to travel restrictions in place globally due to the pandemic, staycations and domestic tourism has got a big boost (“Residents flock to tourist attractions in Khorfakkan on Eid Al Adha,” July 22, Gulf Today).

A close friend of mine recently posted a panoramic image of waves cascading against a beach with a range of hills in the background. I wondered how he could be on a European holiday under the prevailing circumstances. So I texted him to inquire and he shocked me by replying that the place is very much in the UAE – Khorfakkan to be precise.

My friend and his family were mesmerised by what Khorfakkan had to offer to a visitor, so much so that they failed to realise that it was a long drive from Sharjah, where they live.

In fact the city does have a lot on offer from recreational facilities, archaeological and heritage monuments, such as the Resistance Monument, the Al-Adwani, Al-Rabi towers, the heritage village, and the old wall to the mountain waterfall and the Roman amphitheatre that overlooks the Corniche. I must say that the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority have done a tremendous job in sprucing up the city. The images have so tempted my family that the emirate is our destination, come the next long weekend.
