This award season has been a little confusing with plenty of surprise wins popping up. The Academy Awards have brought things into focus with the recently announced nominations which we are looking at this week.

Did anyone doubt that Joker would dominate the nominations? Leading the way with 11 nominations including best picture, best leading actor and best director for Todd Phillips the movie has obviously impressed the people who need to be impressed. Joaquin Phoenix has already won the Golden Globe for the same role, so it is definitely looking more than hopeful for him to secure an Oscar.

Three movies secured 10 nominations each. They are World War I epic 1917, Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s fantasia Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood and Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic The Irishman. Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt are up for best actor and best supporting actor for their roles in Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood. Al Pacino secured a best supporting actor nod for his role in The Irishman.

Scarlett Johansson went from having never being nominated for an Oscar to joining an elite club of double nominees for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. The world’s highest paid actress since 2018 is up for best actress and best supporting actress. Only 11 other actors have earned double nominations in the same year in the history of the Oscars. However, according to critics she is not a favourite to win in either of those categories.
