Mystery shrouds the photo of a red-roofed house that survived the Hawaii fires, which razed the entire neighbourhood to the ground in the historic Lahaina.
An aerial image showed the red roofed house standing intact as the fires destroyed all the homes and buildings.
Embattled officials in Hawaii who have been criticised for not heeding warnings as a deadly wildfire ripped through a town insisted on August 16 that sounding emergency sirens would not have saved lives.
At least 110 people died when the inferno levelled Lahaina last week on the island of Maui, with some residents not aware their town was at risk until they saw the flames for themselves.
The photos of the house have gone viral on social media and survivors of the tragedy are marvelling at the miraculous occurrence.
Social media users have named the structure, now that has become an icon, as “The Red House That Survived Hawaii Wild Fires.”
US media houses aired the footage of the house, which got spared in the wildfires.
The authorities were unable to give any reason about how the house survived the inferno.
Local media reported that Pattie Tamura, whose family owns the house, believes it survived due to its concrete walls.
Tamura said that the house was built by her grandfather using cement to help it withstand bugs and dry rot.
