Sultan Al Neyadi photographs Suez Canal from space, says it is the ‘heart of global trade’

Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi photographed the Suez Canal from the International Space Station.

Neyadi took two photos highlight the features of the canal and the surrounding areas, from oases and roads, and commented, “A view from space of the Suez Canal: Heart of global trade. 🚢

“This artificial waterway in #Egypt connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, and has brought continents closer for over 150 years.”

The history of the Suez Canal dates back to 1854, up to the end of the excavation work on August 18, 1869, which culminated in the opening ceremony on November 17, 1869, in the presence of 6,000 invitees, led by Empress Eugenie, wife of Emperor Napoleon III of France, and a number of emperors, kings, princes and representatives.

Representatives of countries such as Austria, Hungary, Prussia, the Netherlands, and Great Britain boarded yacht “Eagle” and crossed the canal on that day followed by 77 ships, including 50 warships.
