Ankara has been experiencing heavy flooding for the past week, submerging roads and disrupting transport across the city.

A video shared on social media showed flood water gushing from an apartment building in Ankara along with furniture.

The heavy downpour paralyzed daily life in the capital.

The authorities said hundreds of vehicles were submerged in rainwater and floods damaged citizens’ properties in several provinces.

Torrential rain and hail storms swept through the north and centre at the weekend, causing floods near Ankara and another in the central province of the country, local media reported.

According to the information received from Turkish Meteorology services and the latest evaluations, the thunderstorms are expected to continue until Monday evening in Ankara province.

The authorities urged citizens to avoid any outdoor activities.

Bad weather warnings are still in place in several towns and cities in the north and centre, including the capital, Ankara.

Schools were closed in Ankara and the central town of Gemerek.

In 2021, around 100 people died in violent weather events in Turkey, including flash floods, wildfires and droughts.

The disasters pushed climate change up the political agenda, especially among younger voters.
