A video of DR Congo miners trying to save others who were trapped inside of a collapsed mine has come to light.
The authorities have confirmed that workers belong to cobalt mine.
The Congo produces 70% of the world's cobalt, an essential part of the lithium-ion batteries that give electric vehicles the range and durability needed. Cobalt mines often collapse.
Social media users have been sharing the video calling for justice and improving safety standards.
One user said, “It is worth mentioning that Congo is producing 70% of the world's cobalt without safety standards much worse than this.”
The video shows workers digging with their hands as trapped workers are pulled to safety.
It is not clear how many workers were trapped inside the mine and where exactly the tragedy struck, but officials close to mining industry said that the workers were on Cobalt mining.
Despite its vast mineral reserves of minerals, the DR Congo remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
About two-thirds of the population lives on less than $2.15 a day, according to the World Bank.
