The Guinness Book of Records awarded recorded the dog, Bobi, who was born in a small village in central Portugal, the oldest dog in the world, as he reached the age of 30 years and 269 days on Saturday.

Lionel Costa, the owner of Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, celebrated his 30th birthday last year knowing he had broken the record for almost a century held by a dog who was an Australian cattleman who died at the age of 29 years and five months in 1939.

The average life expectancy of Bobi's breed is 12 to 14 years.

Costa attributed his longevity to a number of factors, including living in a quiet countryside without being restricted or wearing a collar around his neck, in addition to the fact that he always ate "what the average person eats."

In January, a chihuahua in Ohio was named the oldest dog living.

The dog, Spike, was found in the parking lot of a grocery store in Camden, Ohio, by Rita Kimball.

Guinness authorities confirmed that as of Dec.7, 2022, Spike was 23 years and 43 days old.

The dog stands at 9 inches tall and weighs just 5.85kg.
