An Asian blackmailed a compatriot, by threatening to publish video clips showing the latter in indecent postures while talking to a woman via video communication technology.

He also asked him for Dhs1,250,000 so that he would not publish the video on social media. The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the suspect to 6 months in jail, fined him Dhs10,000, confiscated his phone, and ordered his deportation after serving his sentence.

The details of the case date back to April 2021, when the complainant received a call from a woman via WhatsApp asking him to get acquainted, as a romantic relationship developed between him and the woman.

During their conversation via video communication, she appeared in an indecent posture and asked him to do the same, and he carried out her request. The complainant added in the investigations that he had received a call from a person who claimed to be the woman’s husband, that he had discovered their relationship and that he would separate from her.

Later, the suspect contacted him via WhatsApp, where he attached several videos in which he appeared in an immoral situation while talking to the woman, and asked him for Dhs1,250,000 so that he would not publish those clips on social media.

The complainant stated that he asked the suspect for time to arrange the amount and left the country on vacation, but he discovered the videos were on social media in his country, as well as on YouTube.

He reportedly contacted the suspect who denied publishing the videos and asked him again for the amount but the complainant informed the police.

According to the case file, the suspect confessed to his crime and that he had asked for that amount from the complainant. The court convicted him on charges of extortion and assault on the privacy of another.
