One person died and seven others were injured in a shooting at Grambling State University in Louisiana early on Sunday, police said, just days after another firearm incident at the same school left one dead.

One of the injured was a student at the university, while the rest were not, Grambling State posted on Twitter.

The school student was "treated for non-life-threatening injuries", and the person killed was not enrolled at the university.

The shooting took place about 1am during homecoming weekend, it said.

It is the second shooting in less than a week at the historically Black college in the southern US state.

Homecoming activities — an annual football game accompanied by parties — were cancelled as were Monday and Tuesday classes, the school said.

Further homecoming events planned for Sunday were canceled, and classes were cancelled for Monday and Tuesday. A curfew was imposed on campus from 9:30pm to 6am until further notice, the school said.

The university said on Wednesday it would increase security on campus after that shooting.
