dubai: A drug addict with a three-month-old baby inside his car engaged police patrols in a street chase on main roads from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah (RAK). The 28-year-old Arab defendant has gone on trial at the Dubai Criminal Court over counts of assaulting a cop, possessing and abusing drugs and driving under the influence and in a manner that put people’s lives at risk.

During a recent hearing he denied resisting arrest. He argued, “I was earlier charged with a similar case with the same types and quantities of drugs.  He confessed to have abused drugs but denied having driven under influence.

“It is impossible for me to drive under the influence with my family members and a child inside the car.” His lawyer asked for time to prepare and present necessary medical documents. The next hearing was scheduled for April 3.

On the record, a source tipped off the police that the defendant was abusing drugs. A team of police patrols was dispatched to apprehend him. They arrived at his residence in Oud Al Muteena at around 8.50am on Aug.15, 2018.

Upon spotting the patrols zeroing in on him he sped off – with a baby on board. He was chased from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah. Records showed the defendant drove in his Nissan Maxima and accelerated dodging police patrols.

A policeman testified, “He was driving recklessly on internal and main roads and was endangering lives of other road users.” Police gave chase and the man trying to escape arrest, jumped a red light signal heading to Sharjah.

Police forces in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah were notified to help intercept the defendant who continued driving across these emirates all the way to RAK.

A police officer explained that when the defendant was being chased in Umm Al Quwain, a cop kept an eye on him and saw he was hurling objects outside his car. His car was cornered in RAK but he refused to cooperate.

He tried to hit one of the police patrols in a frantic attempt to flee. “His car was forced to come to a complete stop. Officers tried to take him out of the car. He was aggressive and posed fierce resistance,” explained a policeman.

The policeman revealed that when the defendant was eventually subdued, police officers discovered there were two women and a three-month-old baby in his car.

Police reportedly searched the car and landed on methamphetamine, hashish and heroin. A urine test, according to records, showed that he was under the influence of drugs during the car chase.
